Last week, in a huge win for free speech, the US Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in Chiles v. Salazar that conversion therapy bans violate the First Amendment. The case was brought to the high court by a Colorado Christian counselor who was prevented from affirming biological reality in her counseling sessions. The ruling protects licensed mental health professionals from discrimination even when their counsel goes against popular opinion.
Wisconsin currently has an administrative rule in place that allows viewpoint discrimination against licensed counselors. Considering the US Supreme Court ruling, we hope to see this rule reversed and the free speech rights of counselors across our state restored.
