Last week, despite strong opposition from pro-family lobbyists and legislators, the Senate passed a bill that will legalize online sports betting in Wisconsin. Since gambling is currently only legal on tribal lands, the bill only allows online sports betting through servers located on tribal lands. Now, the bill will go to Governor Evers desk where he can either veto it or sign it into law. Senator Steve Nass explained the opposition’s point of view, arguing, quote, “public revenue built on addiction, family disintegration and predatory practices is neither moral nor sustainable.”
We are disappointed with the Senate’s decision on this bill. The online sports betting industry preys on the vulnerable and harms individuals, families, and communities. Governor Evers still has the opportunity to prevent this legislation from becoming law, we hope he takes it.
