Local Elections: An Opportunity to Impact Our Communities

Voice your opinion through your vote.

Wisconsin Family Connection – Week of March 16, 2026 – #1661 – “Local Elections: An Opportunity to Impact Our Communities”

As the legislative session wraps up, we are turning our attention to the quickly approaching spring election. On Tuesday, April 7, Wisconsin voters will voice their opinions through their votes in local elections and in the statewide Supreme Court Justice race.

Historically, local elections experience much lower voter turnout than statewide races, but local elections make just as great of an impact – if not a greater impact –on your daily life than the highly publicized races. In addition, since fewer voters traditionally participate in local elections, your vote has the potential to carry more weight than in other elections.

A Wisconsin’s school board’s recent refusal to protect girls highlights the importance of local elections. Although New Richmond is a generally conservative area, liberals control the school board. At the end of January, the New Richmond School Board refused to protect high school girls from biological males in their bathrooms and locker rooms.

At this school board meeting, parents and students pleaded with the school board to keep biological males out of girls’ restrooms and locker rooms. One sixteen-year-old girl named Ella bravely presented the need for policies that protect girls. She shared that often she simply chooses not to use the bathroom at school even though she knows doing so can be unhealthy. She shared that many other girls in her school also feel afraid of using the bathroom since they know that biological males are allowed in. Instead of receiving support and protection from their teachers, girls like Ella are told that they must obtain a pass from the office to use one of four single-stall bathrooms.

Ella said, “Girls should not have to stand in front of adults and beg to feel safe at school. That should already be guaranteed. Adults are supposed to protect kids, not put us in situations where we feel scared, embarrassed, or ignored. I am asking you, please, listen to the girls in this district. Please protect our privacy, our safety, and our dignity. Because right now, a lot of us feel like we are being forgotten.”[i]

One dad whose daughter skips out on gym class because she is afraid to change in the locker room said, “I’m here to protect my child. A father protects, and I will not stay silent.”[ii]

Sadly, five of the seven members of the school board refused to heed to the pleas of students and parents.

This unfortunate situation demonstrates the need for strong participation in local elections. Across Wisconsin, we encourage Christians to begin researching the candidates in their local elections right now. If you’re not sure who’s on your ballot, go to MyVote.WI.gov.

In addition, we encourage you to take advantage of early voting opportunities. Despite your best intentions, sickness, weather, and family emergencies can hold you back from placing your vote on April 7th. Early in-person voting opens next Tuesday, March 24th and goes through April 3rd in many municipalities. Early in-person voting allows you to cast your legal ballot at a time that is convenient for you and helps you avoid long lines on Election Day. In addition, it ensures that your voice will be heard even if something prevents you from making it to the polls on Election Day. We urge Wisconsinites to take advantage of this opportunity to impact their communities this spring election.

We also encourage you to visit MyVote.WI.gov to survey your early and absentee voting options for this election. Call your clerk to verify the times this service is available in your municipality. If you are not registered or need to change your address, you can also take care of that in your clerk’s office.

In addition to important local elections, your ballot will also include the Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice race. We will continue to provide more information about this crucial race in the weeks to come.

Now is the perfect time to make sure you are registered to vote and to make a plan for voting in this election. We are greatly blessed to live in a nation with free elections. As citizens and Christians, we bear the responsibility to honor God with our votes in this election.

For Wisconsin Family Council, this is Daniel Degner reminding you that God, through the prophet Hosea, said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
