Pentagon’s New Policy of Funding Abortion Travel

Pentagon’s New Policy of Funding Abortion Travel

This covers employees' abortion travel expenses.

Republican lawmakers are drafting an amendment to a Department of Defense spending bill to block the Pentagon's new policy of funding abortion travel for its employees who must travel out of state to receive an abortion. On October twentieth, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin sent a memorandum to senior Pentagon leadership, announcing that the department will reimburse the travel expenses of service members traveling out-of-state to obtain an abortion, Austin claimed the new policy is necessary following the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs decision.

Nothing in the high court’s opinion that declared there’s no right to abortion in the constitution requires the military to pay a penny of taxpayer money so women in a state like Wisconsin where most abortions are currently banned can travel to another state for this life-taking procedure. Hopefully, the GOP lawmakers will succeed in blocking this funding.
