House Passes Bill to Protect Abortion Survivors

The GOP-led House voted last week to pass a bill that would require health care providers to try to preserve the life of an infant in the rare case that a baby is born alive during or after an attempted abortion. The bill is not expected to be taken up in the Democratic-controlled Senate, but passage in the House serves as a messaging opportunity for the new Republican majority. The vote was two hundred twenty to two hundred ten. All Republicans present and one Democrat voted for the proposal.

This bill is similar to a bill passed twice in Wisconsin and both times vetoed by Governor Evers. It’s hard to believe that anyone would vote against or veto a bill like this, but this is where abortion advocates are—they are ok with letting a baby die who somehow survives an abortion. We still have a great deal of work to do to change hearts and minds.
