George and Bernice met at the feed store that his father owned. They first got to know each other at a dance her brother asked her to go to. They had very little when they got married but took over the feed store. Bernice shared that she gained a lot from her one room schoolhouse and farm upbringing. She worked on the family farm where everything was done by hand or horse. She later worked at the ammunition factory in Eau Claire to help out the war effort where four of her brothers were. She worked at the feed mill, and grocery store in Gilman and then at Wausau Homes after they moved to Mosinee to help care for Bernice’s diabetic mom. They bought and remodeled the home they still live in. George drove a school bus for 40 years. Bernice proudly maintains their flower and vegetable gardens and she is still making wreaths at 102!
