Art and Joyce married in June of 1951, in a small town in northern Minnesota, fresh out of high school and just before Art left for basic training for the Marine Corps.
Their first child was born while Art served in Korea and, in a humorous turn due to the international dateline (Korea is a day ahead of the US), Art received notification of her birth the day before her birthday. 4 more children were eventually added to their family, which now includes 3 daughters, 2 sons, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, plus even more step-grands and step-great-grands by marriage.
Their large family suits them, as commitment to family has always been foremost for Art and Joyce. Long after their own children had grown, and knowing they had plenty more love to share, they became foster parents – eventually caring for over 320 children.
Their commitment to God and to each other has been an example to their family through the years, sustaining them through many challenges and making the good times that much sweeter. Their commitment to each other continues as Joyce now battles health issues with Art firmly by her side. As Art says, “She didn’t choose this. I can’t imagine my life without her.”
Marriage Advice: Be honest with each other, speak respectfully and be considerate to one another. Open doors for her and hold her hand.
