On January 22, 1973, seven of nine US Supreme Court justices, in a show of raw judicial activism, determined that nationwide a woman deciding to kill her unborn baby was her constitutional right based on a perceived right to privacy provided in the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, even though the word privacy, not to mention any explicit right to privacy, cannot be found in that rule-of-law document anywhere.
To get to that distorted view, these justices essentially made up this so-called “right to abortion” out of whole cloth—or in other words, out of thin air. They were willing to distort the Constitution to reach a conclusion they wanted to reach, good and honest law notwithstanding.
And so, for the past 48 years, we have had wholesale abortion. Since 1973, nearly 62 million unborn Americans have been sacrificed on the altar, largely of personal convenience and choice. In Wisconsin, nearly 550,000 unborn babies have been aborted. In context that is the combined current populations of our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th largest cities—Madison, Green Bay, Kenosha, and Racine. That’s a staggering reality—or it should be.
What we have lost is not potential life; we have lost human life with potential—and we have lost these lives with everyone involved having legal protection. That’s the reality of abortion. This loss is not without consequences.
Some experts have estimated that “legalizing abortion causes a loss of between $70 billion and $135 billion of economic activity (valued work) each year in the United States.” Another $10 billion to $33 billion is lost in annual tax revenue.[1] Remember these were human beings, most of whom—experts say about two-thirds—would have grown up to become productive members of the work force. For those who for some reason can’t see the moral aspect—or better said, immoral aspect—of abortion, perhaps the financial impact will make a difference.
Since Roe v. Wade, pro-life work has started and grown, resulting in appropriate abortion restrictions and requirements in the states, including Wisconsin. These have resulted in thousands of babies’ lives being saved, as women have been, for instance, required to wait 24 hours after the initial consult with an abortion provider and get an ultrasound done before an abortion.
Over the last four years, President Trump has been overtly pro-life. From his earliest days in office, he reinstated the Mexico City Policy, put in place a rule governing federal funds to abortion providers, took action to protect the conscience rights of pro-life doctors, nurses and organizations such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, appointed strict constitutionalists to the courts and more.
This past Monday, two days before leaving office, President Trump took time to issue a proclamation regarding National Sanctity of Life Day on January 22.[2] He openly declares that God is the author of life and calls on Congress to protect and defend “the dignity of every human life, including those not yet born.” He calls on the American people “to continue to care for women in unexpected pregnancies and to support adoption and foster care in a more meaningful way” and then asks “every citizen…to listen to the sound of silence caused by a generation lost to us, and then raise their voces for all affected by abortion, both seen and unseen.”
Remember this proclamation next January when Joe Biden is president because I am quite sure we won’t have anything recognizing Sanctity of Human Life month coming out of the White House then or at all during the next four years. Joe Biden has proclaimed his allegiance to Planned Parenthood, believing abortion is health care. He has pledged to restore taxpayer funding to the abortion giant and believes those seven unelected, unaccountable Supreme Court justices back in 1973 got it right when they concocted a privacy right to abortion in this country.[3]
I hope this phrases rings in our ears over and over again: elections have consequences. In this case, the consequence is truly one of preferring death over life. That said, pro-life citizens must never, ever stop pushing back against the darkness, working harder and smarter to change the hearts and minds of Americans on this issue that rests on the fundamental truth that in the beginning God “created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them….”
