WI Charity Secures Victory in Religious Freedom Case

Religious freedom must be protected.

Earlier this year the Catholic Charities Bureau won an important religious freedom case in the United States Supreme Court. Catholic Charities originally filed the lawsuit against the Wisconsin Labor and Industrial Review Commission for revoking tax exemptions by claiming that Catholic Charities was not religious because they served non-Catholics. Unfortunately, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul attempted to remove the exemption entirely as a result. Thankfully, the Wisconsin Supreme Court threw out Kaul's case on Monday.

What this case came down to was whether the state has the authority to determine what is a religious activity and what is not. Allowing the state to decide this question would have put churches at risk. We're grateful for the Court's decision to stand with religious freedom.
