The Bible: God’s Immeasurable Blessing to Us

The Bible: God’s Immeasurable Blessing to Us

America needs the Bible.

2025 | Week of December 29 | Radio Transcript #1650

What if one simple practice could radically reduce four of the greatest threats to healthy families? Research time and time again demonstrates that gambling, pornography, immoral relationships, and alcohol abuse steadily contribute to the breakdown of families in our State. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one simple practice could radically reduce all four of these issues? Research conducted by the Center for Bible Engagement found that regularly reading the Bible cuts these practices in half. Their research found that Christians who read the Bible at least four times a week are 57% less likely to get drunk, 61% less likely to view pornography, 68% less likely to have sex outside of marriage, and 74% less likely to gamble than Christians who read the Bible less than four times a week or not at all.

The Center for Bible Engagement notes, “The life of someone who engages Scripture four or more times a week looks radically different from the life of someone who does not. In fact, the lives of Christians who do not engage with the Bible most days of the week look no different from the lives of non-believers.”[i]

The Bible is truly transforming. And, of course, the Bible is not simply a means to reformed behavior, but much more importantly the word of God to mankind showing us how our relationship with God can be restored. Ultimately, only Christ’s miraculous salvation can lead to such a radical transformation of behavior.

America needs the Bible. Our society doesn’t simply need outward behavioral changes, but much more importantly, the inward transformation that God alone can provide.

Every year the American Bible Society releases its State of the Bible report. This year’s report brings good news: after a few years of lowering interest, the number of Americans who engage with the Bible is once again rising. In 2025, forty-one percent of Americans read the Bible at least three times a year outside of church services. Although three times may seem like an incredibly low bar, it does demonstrate that these individuals turned to the Bible at least three times. This number represents ten million more Americans engaging with the Bible than last year. Surprisingly, Millennials have driven this upward trend showing the biggest percentage change since last year.

Here in the Midwest (including Wisconsin), we experienced an encouraging five percent jump since last year, a difference of thirty-four to now thirty-nine percent of people reading the Bible.

Perhaps most importantly, in the survey, more than half of Americans responded that they are curious about the Bible and/or Jesus. That friend or coworker you feel nervous about sharing the gospel with may be far more interested in your faith than you realize. Now is not the time to shrink back in fear. With so many people searching for answers and curious about faith, we ought to take the opportunity to share the truth of God’s Word with them.[ii]

The transforming impact of the Bible is the reason why we are partnering as Wisconsin’s representative at America Reads the Bible to reach thousands of Americans with God’s Word this April during the country’s 250th anniversary to point people back to our biblical foundations. At this weeklong event hosted at the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C., four hundred twenty leaders including Cabinet members, Members of Congress, governors, sports figures, Hollywood personalities, and national Christians leaders will read the Bible from Genesis 1 through Revelation 21. Wisconsin Family Council’s President Emeritus, Julaine Appling, and I are honored to be a part of this event, and we hope that it will encourage many more Americans to make daily Bible reading a part of their lives.

Reading the Bible is far more than just a weeklong event. As we head into 2026, perhaps the best decision you could make is to spend time in God’s Word every day of the new year. Ask a friend or family member to join you and set aside a time of day that suits you. Regardless of whether you plan to read the Bible from cover to cover or to dig deeply into a couple books. Whatever reading plan you choose, don’t miss out on the immeasurable blessing of God’s Word in your life this year.

For Wisconsin Family Council, this is Daniel Degner wishing everyone a blessed New Year and reminding you that God, through the prophet Hosea, said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
