Respect for Marriage Act

On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives passed a bill wrongly named the Respect for Marriage Act. This bill codifies same-sex marriage supposedly in reaction to US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion that overturned Roe. Thomas indicated the high court should reconsider a number of decisions based on a better understanding of the fourteenth amendment, including Obergefell which legalized marriage between two persons of the same sex. All democrats voted in favor of the bill and were joined by forty-seven Republicans.

This bill actually disrespects marriage. It’s political grandstanding going into the fall elections. Hopefully the senate will have the courage to stop this bill. I’m pleased to report that all five Wisconsin Republican members of the House of Representatives—Brian Steil, Scott Fitzgereald, Glenn Grothman, Mike Gallagher and Tom Tiffany voted against the proposal.
