How Screen Time is Affecting Children

Screens should only be used as tools.

The National University of Singapore and two Korean research groups recently released a ten-year study analyzing how screen time effects the developmental progress of children. Researchers found that children exposed to screens during development, especially those exposed to screens before age two, were more likely to develop anxiety and failed to develop good decision-making skills. Since, according to the CDC, over 60% of boys and girls aged two to seventeen spend over two hours a day on screens, these results are concerning.

Screen time has become a normal part of both family life and education, but the results of this study should drive both parents and educators to carefully consider the best way to implement screens into a child's development and education. Screens should be used as tools to aid, rather than hinder, these processes.
