In an article from Institute for Family Studies, psychologist Andrea Gurney, describes a new cultural phenomenon called "going no contact" which occurs when family members decide to sever all ties because of conflict. Although at times there are real reasons to do this, often, Gurney explains, many individuals who engage in this behavior are simply refusing to resolve their differences and mend relationships. The consequence of this avoidance, she argues, is "profound and ultimately damaging for our communities and culture."
Over the next few days, many of us will have opportunities to connect with family. In the difficult moments we should remember that God's design for family is central to humanity. We must learn to work through dysfunction rather than simply giving up and choose forgiveness over resentment.
