Almost 60% of Girls Report Depression

Almost 60% of girls nationally report depression.

Earlier this week Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services issued a press release regarding what they call “troubling rates” of poor mental health in girl and young women in our state, with nearly sixty percent of teen girls nationally reporting depression. The department says stressors driving this significant increase over the last decade include academic demands, early puberty, early sexualization, body image, bullying, and discrimination.

We agree with the department. Widespread depression among girls and young women is indeed troubling. Research continues to mount that shows social media is a major contributor to this problem. This is another clarion call to parents to delay smart phones as long as possible, monitor all apps and screen time. Be the protector your daughter needs!
