School Choice in Wisconsin

Last week the Department of Public Instruction released enrollment numbers for all education sectors in Wisconsin for this fall. Overall, public schools showed a small decline in enrollment while the state’s four private school parental choice programs (Milwaukee, Racine, Statewide, Special Needs) reported a combined increase of 6.6 percent over 2020. Nearly 49,000 students in grades pre-K through twelfth are currently enrolled in a parental choice or voucher program. Independent charter schools reported an increase of 15.6% over last year.

Julaine Appling responded positively to these reports: “Parents are making important choices regarding the education of their children. These numbers tell a story—a story of discontent with what is happening in public schools and a story of encouragement that we have viable educational options that parents know about and are taking advantage of.”

If you have children and are looking for more educational options for your children, see what’s available in Wisconsin HERE.

If you value children being taught a biblical worldview check out Family Research Council’s new initiative For the Sake of Our Children where they are on a mission to raise $1,000,000 and prevent the loss of these and future generations by developing resources for children, parents, and pastors.

Engaging the Culture for God’s Glory

Last week we hosted two successful events about engaging our culture for God’s glory.

Thursday’s Going Local: Making Communities Great Again, was the third of our local training series to reach capacity two days before the event. It was encouraging to see so many individuals show up to be equipped to defend God’s plan for marriage, family, life and religious freedom in their own communities. Pictured left is the most recent event we had in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.

All day Saturday individuals gathered to become small group facilitators for Del Tackett’s newest discipleship program The Engagement Project. Del Tackett, creator of The Truth Project, personally led the training and invested in each attendee. We’re excited to see how God uses The Engagement Project to help individuals connect with those around them the way God intended.

We still have one more Going Local training event on November 18. Claim your seat HERE!

What Breast Cancer Awareness & Planned Parenthood have in Common

When students — or anyone, for that matter — wear pink in an effort to participate in the annual Susan G. Komen Foundation Breast Cancer Awareness month there’s a high probability they are also unknowingly supporting abortion.

Julaine Appling explained it like this, “Back in 2012, pro-life organizations exposed that Komen was significantly funding Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. … As recently as last year, there are reports of state Planned Parenthood agencies receiving Komen funding. Supposedly, this money goes to fund breast cancer screenings, mammograms, biopsies and related education efforts. … [E]ven though this money is given for “non-abortion” procedures, [it still] creates a financial benefit for this organization that every year performs the most abortions in the country.”

Furthermore, multiple studies have shown that women who have abortions are more likely to suffer breast cancer. When women seek an abortion in the state of Wisconsin, this information is not disclosed.

Julaine Appling said that WFA has been working to have the link between breast cancer and abortions disclosed in the Women’s Right To Know publication that is required to be given to a woman prior to an abortion: “Our organization has believed the research for years. … [O]ver 20 years ago, we tried to get the state to add information about this abortion-breast-cancer link to the women’s right to know publication. Even with a conservative department head who met with us and with Dr. Brind [one of the earliest researches on the ABC link], we were summarily shut down.”

While we believe that abortion is wrong under any and all circumstances, we also believe that women who are legally pursuing an abortion have the right to know what they are risking. Until this information on the link between abortion and breast cancer is clearly disclosed, it is important for us as individuals to communicate scientific stats so that women can make an informed decision.

Valuing Pastors in October

Among other recognitions, October is also Pastor Appreciation Month. In normal times, pastors have many demands and expectations on them. Over the last eighteen months, those demands and expectations have increased considerably. They have had to figure out how to maintain effective ministry in the midst of this virus crisis in order to meet the needs of their people. Wisconsin Family Council believes it is always appropriate to express appreciation to our pastors but that it is even more important this year to encourage them in word, deed and prayer.

Julaine Appling encouraged families to intentionally show their appreciation for pastors this month, “We love pastors. We know their workload is tremendous and that the care of the ‘flock’ takes enormous energy and time. We hope church members will take some time yet this month to send a note of encouragement, a gift card to a special restaurant, or do something that says to their pastor, we are grateful for you and all that you do to lead our church every day.”
