Why You Should Work on Tasks as a Family

John Cuddeback, writing for the Institute for Family Studies, encourages families to engage children in meaningful work during the summer. Cuddeback says, “Anything we do to arrange for some meaningful work can make a real difference. Maybe it is just one larger project or two, or a series of smaller but connected projects. Maybe it is taking up a new art or learning one new skill, or honing one they already have. One key will be finding labor that involves at least one parent. Tried and true ways, such as gardening, are worth special consideration.”

Gardening and working outside as a family is an especially good option in the summer because the weather is more inviting and being outside decreases stress. According to John Stonestreet from Breakpoint, “Studies indicate that just being in nature reduces stress. And that shouldn’t surprise us. We were made to marvel at this beautiful world, placed in a Garden by God to enjoy His handiwork.”

Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Family Council, expounded, “Purposeful work, especially when it’s done as a family, is not just rewarding in the sense of completing a task or growing something or building something; it can be a really powerful way to strengthen family bonds. There’s just something about everyone accomplishing a project or task that gives an irreplaceable feeling of togetherness and family solidarity.”

Even before the fall in the Garden of Eden God had ordained work (Genesis 2:15). Work is good for us; it reminds us that we have value, allows us to contribute value to others and to walk in the image of our God who worked!

The Abortion Case from Mississippi that Could Overturn Roe v. Wade

In Wisconsin, we have a law that bans abortion after 20 weeks. This May the US Supreme Court agreed to take up a case dealing with a similar law from Mississippi. Some maintain that this case could overturn the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that gave us abortion on demand in all fifty states.

Mississippi, which has just one abortion facility, passed a law in 2018 that banned abortions after fifteen weeks gestation.

This law was almost immediately blocked by the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals. The federal appeals court contended that the US Supreme Court held that states didn’t have the right to restrict abortion until after viability, generally considered to be about twenty-four weeks. Therefore, by banning abortions after 15 weeks Mississippi is challenging the Supreme Court Justices to not only re-examine the viability standard but to ultimately overturn Roe v. Wade.

It’s important to clarify here that at the moment of conception we do not have “potential life”; rather, we have life with potential.

Since the high court agreed to hear this case and as we near oral arguments this fall, many pro-life organizations have submitted friend-of-the-court briefs in support of Mississippi’s position. We have joined on one of those briefs. In fact, the brief that Wisconsin Family Action joined with 21 other state Family Policy Councils offers a first-ever argument for overturning Roe based on the Ninth Amendment.

Last Thursday, Mississippi Attorney General Fitch filed a very strong brief arguing that the US Supreme Court needs to overturn the 47-year-old abortion-granting decision.

In her brief, AG Fitch directly challenges Roe’s assertion of a “right to privacy,” stating, “[A] right to abortion cannot be justified by a right of privacy or a right to make important personal decisions. Nowhere else in the law does a right of privacy or a right to make personal decisions provide a right to destroy a human life.”

This AG could have taken the easy way out and just asked the court to push viability back, but she didn’t. Needless to say, prolifers across the country are excited to see this kind of courage in an elected official and the possibility of Roe v Wade overturned.

AT THE US CAPITOL: New Amendment Requiring Women to Register for the Draft

Yesterday the Family Research Council sent out an email explaining a senate-approved amendment in Washington D.C.: “The Senate Armed Services Committee has just approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would require women to register for the draft….America has not used the draft since 1973, and we have enough men to fill draft requirements should a major conflict arise. (We could approximately double the size of our armed forces force to 5 million, for example, by only requiring 2.5% of the male population to serve.) Should the draft need to be reinstated, randomly selected women should not be required to enlist ahead of able-bodied men.”

FRC went on the explain that this amendment would hinder the effectiveness of our military: “Studies show that sex-related physical differences negatively affected coed units’ speed and effectiveness. Furthermore, female service in combat units requires the military to provide certain accommodations otherwise unnecessary. Co-ed units would either require special privacy concerns to be accommodated in the most austere of circumstances or sacrifice the privacy needs of servicemen and women. These considerations hinder the singular focus that is needed on the battlefield to defeat the enemy.”

Julaine Appling explained that this amendment would also significantly affect young women and families, “Requiring women to register for the military draft is a seismic change for America. Citizens need to be aware of this proposal and should let our US senators, Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin, know their opinion. Should this become law, not only would our military be drastically impacted, but also the lives and futures of young women and families will be significantly affected.”

A Healthy Marriage’s Impact on a Christian’s Public Witness

Jim Denison says strong marriages strengthen Christians’ public witness. Dennison shares that a counselor once told him, “The best way you can love your church is to love your wife. And the best way you can love your wife is to love your Lord.”  He notes that God designed marriage and the family unit and loves it. In fact, marriage is the earthly representation, according to Scripture, of Christ’s relationship with His Bride, the Church. In light of these truths, Denison calls on couples to renew their vows to the Lord and to each other.

Julaine Appling commented, “The world is watching our marriages and families to see if we actually live out what we say we believe. Satan is out to destroy marriages and families — especially for Christians — because in so doing, he knows he can keep people from believing in the Gospel and trusting the Savior. Safeguarding one’s marriage and family should be a top priority for husbands and wives.”
