In Psalm 2:1, the Psalmist asks the question, “Why do the heathen [nations] rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” What is the "vain [meaningless and futile] thing" they imagine? Verse 2 appears to answer that question by observing that the kings and rulers of the earth have decided to align themselves “against the Lord, and against his anointed.” It doesn’t get any more vain than that!
