A Trans-champion

2015 – Week of June 8 – #1101

“Male and female created He them…and God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

The Creator God says He made two sexes…period. That’s extremely clear if you accept the authority of the Bible. Today, cultural, political, and academic elitists are very sure they know more than the One Who created us. They are their own authority. Thus, to them there’s nothing clear and definite about only two sexes—male and female. To them one’s biological sex is, as they say, “fluid.” From their perspective, male and female are on some kind of continuum. Thus they much prefer the term “gender,” which is based on cultural and personal perceptions and can, according to some today, change along that continuum, allowing for people to supposedly trans—that is cross or change—their gender.

Adding to the cultural confusion on this, the federal government has been handing down dictates through various agencies making it seem as if the military, businesses and schools must give special accommodations to those who are deeming themselves transgendered. They sound like requirements, but they are really just recommendations. The agencies are advising everyone to be sure to give transgendered persons special accommodations for restrooms, changing rooms or locker rooms. To do otherwise could, per the notices, result in lawsuits.

In the midst of all this and on the first day of the month in which our US Supreme Court will be handing down a decision on the legal definition of marriage—and could very easily be determining that there is no difference between male and female in child-rearing, enters confused Bruce Jenner. Jenner had previously told the world he has long thought he was a woman, but that he wouldn’t make it official until June 1. True to his word, he did just that. Do you suppose it was coincidental that June is, as proclaimed by President Obama and others, LGBTQ Pride month —with the “t” standing for transgender? I don’t think it’s a coincidence. I think it’s well orchestrated.

Former track and field Olympic champion Jenner is now the high-profile transgender champion the liberals have been waiting for. The liberal media has made his story an intensely emotional tale of a tormented man who is finally free to be who he really is. Now those beating on the military, businesses and schools trying to force them to stop being, as they see it, discriminatory, hateful, bigoted bullies, have a famous name—and all kinds of emotion—to fuel their efforts.  Make no mistake: we are seeing the next civil rights issue very quickly developing.

At least one expert in this area is still thinking clearly and recognizes that people struggling with this issue do indeed have a problem—a mental problem, not a physical one. Dr. Paul McHugh is the former psychiatrist in chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has been writing for over ten years about why years ago Johns Hopkins, which was the first American hospital to begin so-called “sex-reassignment surgery,” quit doing such procedures. The basic problem is that these surgeries didn’t solve or change the psycho-social problems of the people who had the procedure. In fact, sometimes it made it worse.  McHugh writes that what these folks need is to be offered real help and real hope instead of being told that whatever they think or feel about what sex they are is what is reality. Encouraging these confused persons to change their dress and mannerisms and even to have surgeries just compounds their problem.

Changing military, business and school policies to adapt to these who are struggling with their gender identity is not the answer either. At a minimum, such policies put other people in very uncomfortable situations. In schools, allowing boys who think they are girls and girls who think they are boys to use restrooms and locker rooms of the sex they identify with is a gross invasion of a student’s physical privacy. It’s wrong; it’s potentially dangerous. But it’s going to happen if people don’t start standing up, speaking up and pushing back on this issue.

How to deal with transgenders in the public arena is confusing and complex. It’s that way because we have abandoned the authority of the Word of God. In the beginning He created male and female and said it was very good. Everything and anything else is not real, is a lie and is ultimately harmful to people. Even Bruce Jenner will eventually find that to be true.
