... 2007 Vote Scorecard now available on web
Wisconsin Family Action (WFA), Wisconsin Family Council’s legislative action arm, has just published the 2007 Vote Scorecard on its website. This Scorecard covers the first year of this two-year session (2007-2008) for the Wisconsin state legislature and represents a compilation of significant votes on a cross section of issues affecting the family. The votes of each legislator are “scored” in comparison to WFA’s position on the measure. A 100% score indicates the legislator agreed with WFA’s position on all items

... Freedom From Religion Foundation files suit against Green Bay to prevent future nativity scene displays
Before Christmas, the city of Green Bay had a display on the front lawn of City Hall that included Santa Claus, a Christmas tree, and a nativity scene. After the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) threatened to sue the city, the city council voted to keep the display up until the day after Christmas. FFRF carried out their threat and is suing the city to prevent future displays of a nativity scene. Liberty Counsel is representing the city at no charge. More…

... Proposed bills to overturn state’s historic criminal abortion statute and modify partial birth abortion ban
At the end of the first year of the 2007-2008 legislative session, Sen. Mark Miller (D-Monona) introduced SB 398, a bill that would repeal Wisconsin’s criminal abortion statute, Sec. 940.04. Repealing the statute would mean that Wisconsin would have no law prohibiting abortion if Roe v. Wade were to be overturned and any law prohibiting or restricting abortion would have to be introduced as new legislation. This statute has been on the books since 1849, although Roe v. Wade has made it unenforceable since 1973.

Rep. Jim Ott (R-Mequon) has introduced a bill (AB 710) that would conform Wisconsin's partial-birth abortion ban to the federal ban that the U.S. Supreme Court has found constitutional.

... Bills introduced to remove statute of limitations for civil lawsuits involving child abuse cases
Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) and Sen. Julie Lassa (D-Stevens Point) have introduced bills (AB 651 and SB 356) that would completely remove the statute of limitations civil lawsuits involving child abuse and open a 3-year window of opportunity for cases to be filed in situations where the statute of limitations has already expired. The lawsuit can be brought against the person responsible for the assault and/or his/her employer if the assault occurred in part because of the employer’s negligence. Currently a victim of abuse as a child has until he/she is 35 years old to file civil suit against the perpetrator and any entity involved. Wisconsin Family Action provided testimony at a public hearing this week on SB 356. A hearing on AB 651 is scheduled for January 24, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. in Room 328 NW, State Capitol.

... Final vote on Chemical Abortion Hospital Mandate bill; hearing on physician-assisted suicide bill
On Wednesday, January 23, 2008, the state Assembly will vote on final passage of AB 377, a bill that requires all hospitals and hospital personnel to give "emergency contraception" to sexual assault victims who request it. "Emergency contraception" is a very high dose of birth control pills that can act to cause a very early abortion by preventing the human embryo from implanting in the mother's womb. The bill has no exemptions for conscience or religious convictions.

Also on January 23, 2008, SB 151, a bill that would permit an individual to request medication from his/her physician to kill himself, will receive a public hearing at 10:00 a.m. in Room 411 South, State Capitol, before the committee on Public Health, Senior Issues, Long Term Care and Privacy. The bill provides that making a request for medication does not constitute attempted suicide and that taking medication under a fulfilled request does not constitute suicide. An attending physician who refuses to fulfill a valid request and fails to make a good faith attempt to transfer the requester to another physician who will fulfill the request may be charged with unprofessional conduct.

... Student suspended for anti-Christianity speech
A Janesville Parker High School student was suspended last month after he ripped out pages from a Bible and used violent, offensive language referring to Christians and Christianity during a speech in English class. School principal Dale Carlson said that students who had concerns about the speech should see him. Paul Jacobson, Sr., whose daughter was in the class, stated that "...the district has made no statement to the class or school that this boy’s actions were bullying, hateful and threatening.” More…

... Roe v. Wade: You may not know as much as you think you do.

... Governor signs New Jersey expanded hate crimes bill
Among the 80 bills that New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine signed earlier this week was a bill that adds “gender identity and expression” to New Jersey’s hate crimes law. It also requires all new police officers to attend a mandatory, two-hour hate-crimes sensitivity training. (Greg Quinlan of New Jersey Family First, the legislative arm of New Jersey Family Policy Council, discussed the bill in a CitizenLink article last week before Gov. Corzine had signed the bill.)

... Elderly gentleman attacked while counseling outside of Pennsylvania abortion clinic
As 69-year-old Ed Snell attempted to speak with a woman going into an abortion clinic in Harrisburg, PA, a man accompanying the woman knocked him unconscious, causing Snell to be hospitalized with multiple trauma, bleeding in his head, compression fractures of four vertebrae, two broken ribs and a broken shoulder. Police officers let the attacker go and threatened to arrest pro-life witnesses to the attack when they protested. The assailant was arrested only after Snell’s injuries were documented. More…

... National motto returns to prominence on face of coins
A 2005 law required the national motto, “In God We Trust, ” to be moved to the edge of the $1 Presidential coins. President Bush recently signed a massive omnibus spending bill that included a measure sponsored by Sens. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) and Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) that returns “In God we trust” to either side of the coin on its face. (Sens. Brownback’s and Wicker’s measure appears on page 175 of the bill.) More…

... Domestic partnership advocates seek to destroy DOMA
The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act (S. 2521 and its companion bill, H.R. 4838) would make federal employees and their same-sex partners eligible for federal health and insurance benefits, essentially invalidating the federal Defense of Marriage Act.. Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-CD 2) is one of the sponsors of H.R. 4838. More…

... Pro-family advocates ask President Bush to limit Title X funding for abortion providers
Pro-life and pro-family advocates, including Wisconsin Family Council, have sent a letter to President Bush asking him to limit Title X program funding that abortion providers receive. The letter asked the president to force abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, to separate their abortion and family planning funding in order that public funding does not pay for the killing of unborn children.
