Around Wisconsin

... Assembly budget includes pro-family items
Last week the Assembly passed its version of the budget on a vote of 51 to 44. It limits the family planning demonstration project by eliminating the expansion of the program to males, keeping the qualifying income level at 185% of poverty level, limiting participating to women 18 years old and above, and prohibiting the Department of Health and Human Services from funding family planning organizations that provide abortion services or make abortion referrals. Governor Doyle earlier this week set an August 1 deadline for the Senate and Assembly to resolve their budget differences. Members of the joint conference committee are Sens. Judy Robson (D-Beloit), Russ Decker (D-Weston), Bob Jauch (D-Poplar), Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) and Reps. Michael Huebsch (R-West Salem), Kitty Rhoades (R-Hudson), Jeff Fitzgerald (R-Horicon), and James Kreuser (D-Kenosha). (Back to top)

... Bill introduced that redefines abortion
Late last week Sen. Robson (D-Beloit) introduced SB 232, a bill that redefines abortion to exclude any form of contraceptive approved by the Food & Drug Administration and forces pharmacists to dispense all such contraceptives or face disciplinary action and large fines. Wisconsin Statutes 20.927 (1g) currently define “abortion” as "the intentional destruction of the
life of an unborn child, and 'unborn child' means a human being from the time of conception until it is born alive." SB 232 defines abortion as the "the intentional destruction of . . . an embryo or fetus, but does not include the use, administration, delivery, prescribing, or dispensing of any federal−food−and−drug−administration−approved contraceptive." [Note: This new definition of abortion ignores the abortifacient nature of many contraceptives that cause the death of a newly conceived human being by preventing it from implanting in the uterus.] (Back to top)

... Hate crimes bill filed as amendment to defense authorization bill
The US Senate hate crimes bill (S.1105) has been added to the Department of Defense Reauthorization Bill (H.R.1585) as Senate Amendment 2067 (SA 2067). S.1105 had been awaiting action by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The House of Representatives passed its hate crimes bill (H.R.1592) in early May and had also been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. (Talking points on H.R.1592) SA 2067 is only one of 226 proposed amendments to H.R. 1585. It is important to let your senators know your views on this amendment. Following is information for Wisconsin's senators:

... Potential dangers lurking in Apple's new iPhones
The National Coalition for the Protection of Chidlren & Families urges parents to become educated about the new Apple iPhone before purchasing one for their children. Service plans allow unlimited internet access from the iPhone that would include access to sites not suitable for children. Parents should set clear boundaries for their children and contact service providers about parental controls and safety features for the iPhone. Read more... (Back to top)
